The Fly Fishing Discovery Center (FFDC) is the museum and education center owned by the Federation of Fly Fishers (FFF). Located in the Lincoln School Building in the Historic District of Livingston, Montana, the FFDC is just minutes from I-90 and is a must visit for every angler heading through Montana.

Facilities: Unique in its dual role as a museum and education facility the FFDC offers something for everyone. Exhibits in the FFDC’s Tackle Room chronicle the history of fly fishing with displays of rods, reels, lines, float tubes and an extensive collection of outstanding art. The Fly Room features thousands of flies tied by masters from around the world, including the work of over a dozen Buzek award winners. The Lewis A. Bell Memorial Fly Fishing Library is also available to visitors, writers and researchers. This collection houses a constantly expanding body of fly fishing books and journals.

Live fish and informative exhibits teach visitors about fish adaptations, diversity, behavior and conservation. The FFDC’s Warmwater Room features aquariums filled with bass, panfish, minnows, and even a pallid sturgeon. The Coldwater Room houses a unique display featuring a Cutthroat trout, an egg hatching tank, and an aquatic invertebrate tank. Yellowstone Cutthroat trout hatched in the Whitlock Vibert Box Tank help illustrate fish life cycles as well as habitat requirements for healthy growth. A dedicated classroom serves to assist visiting groups and teachers by providing a space for in-depth lessons and hands on activities.

History: Initially located in West Yellowstone, Montana, the FFDC a dedicated in 1981 with joint participation by former US President Jimmy Carter, Montana Governor Ted Schwinden, Yellowstone National Park Superintendent John Townsley and many other notables. In August of 1996 the FFDC moved to its present location in Livingston where it now serves schools and the public year round.

Get Involved: The FFDC is supported through a variety of sources, the most important being you. If you have an item, display, work of art, or would like to make a monetary donation please contact the FFDC at (406) 222-9369 or iffc@wtp.net. All donations are tax deductible. The FFF is an approved 501 (c) 3 organization.
